The two catch your gaze as they sit among a flourishing garden, close enough to the apple of knowledge to taste it, but mindful of the snake lying in the grass. The Lovers traditionally represent the storied Garden of Eden, and here we can see echoes of its influence as their gaze meets both the viewer and an unknown source beyond. They rest together comfortably, for now, unaware there is a world beyond the garden, signified by the haziness behind them.
